What is seborrheic dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common inflammatory dermatosis which causes the creation of whitish layers on oily areas, like the scalp or the inside of the ear. It sometimes appears in the form of dry skin on newly-born babies and it is also known as dandruff or seborrheic eczema. It can be found mostly on areas of the body where there are many sebaceous glands where the area is more active. Generally it appears on the scalp and the sides of the nose, on the lower part of the nose, over the chest. It also appears on the breasts, on skin folds, around the genitals and around the belly button of overweight people.

Causes for seborrheic dermatitis

There is no well-known cause for this skin disease. It is generally accepted though that it is caused by mycosis, hormonal disorders or excessive production of sebum. An oil-friendly fungus, Pityrosporum ovale, seems to be connected to the pathogenecity of seborrheic dermatitis which might be the reaction to that particular fungus.

Dandruff could be considered the first stages of seborrheic dermatitis. The biggest difference between dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis is that the former is a mild, non-inflammatory condition whereas the latter is inflammatory.
