Tips for Healthy Teeth

Oral problems can cause problems throughout the body. There are simple ways to keep yours and your children teeth healthy and strong but the key is to learn to take care of them at an early age.

Taking care of your children’s teeth

One in four children develops symptoms of caries before going to school. Dental care should begin as soon as the first teeth appear, ie around 6 months. If you have a baby, you can brush his teeth with a clean, damp cloth or a very soft toothbrush. When the child is two years old, you can let him slowly start washing them on his own under your supervision.

Avoid sugar

When bacteria in the mouth break down simple sugars, they produce acids that can corrode the enamel causing caries. Sugar raises the levels of acids in the mouth for a long time. Candies, a children’s favorite treat, are also dangerous because they stay on the surface of the teeth.

Use fluoride sparingly

Fluoride strengthens the enamel, preventing the chances of caries. Many toothpastes and mouthwashes contain fluoride. Fluoride should be used sparingly in young children because large amounts can cause white marks on teeth.

Brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily

Gingivitis and caries are among the most serious dental diseases and the most common. You and your children should change your toothbrush every three months and not neglect flossing. The spaces between the teeth that are not cleaned cause the above diseases. Teenagers with braces need special toothbrushes and other special dental tools. If you have difficulty using the toothbrush or floss, you can try an electric toothbrush.

Brush your teeth or chew gum after meals

In addition to brushing and flossing, you can rinse your mouth with an antibacterial oral solution. Alternatively, chew sugar-free chewing gum after a meal. This increases the production of saliva, which removes bacteria and neutralizes acid.

Do not smoke

Smoke yellows teeth and increases the risk of gingivitis and oral cancer. If you smoke, try to quit to set a good example for your children and advise them about its harmful effects.
