Key Features in Expired Cosmetic Products

Research has shown that at least one in two women uses their beauty products beyond their expiration date. However, there are times where even though a product hasn’t still expired, there are changes in it due to external factors.
An alteration of a product is characterized by the oxidation of oils and fats by atmospheric oxygen. Factors that affect the product deterioration are the oxygen of the atmosphere and for this reason we should close the packages of our cosmetics very well in order to limit the existence of air. The rise in temperature accelerates the process of alteration, which is due to the increase in the rate of formation of free radicals. Light and radiation generally help to create free radicals. Moisture, like bacteria, causes hydrolysis of fats and oils into fatty acids.
For the best possible maintenance of our cosmetics, it is best to store them in a dry and cool place away from the sun.

But how do we know that our cosmetics have gone bad?

Some of the key changes that a cosmetic undergoes are:

Changes in its fluidity: It changes the way the product flows. A cream can become thinner or thicker than its original form.

Phase separation: By this term we mean that the product ingredients start separating. For example, in a cream, drops of watery and oily substance will be observed at the same time. In other words, the cream loses its consistency.

Odor: The change for the worse in the smell of the cosmetic product is a key feature of its deterioration.

Discoloration: Discoloration may occur altogether or there may be scattered dark spots on the surface of the product, which is a sign of fungal infection.

Tanning: It is caused by air, light or temperature and is presented with an oily yellow appearance on the surface of the product and in the container.

Blurring: This phenomenon is observed in liquid cosmetic product which loses its clarity.

Appearance of redness or allergy on the skin: Rinse the affected area very well in case you feel stinging, itching or other unwanted discomfort.
